Filed under: Education, That's entertainmentI don't think anyone would disagree that reading to your kids is one of the most important things you can do for them during their early years. In fact, I would even go so far as to say it should be mandatory. That would include Florida, which, according to the St. Petersburg Times, ranks 46th out of 50 in parents reading to their kids.In order to try and raise that ranking, the Times is offering some tips on reading to kids and some suggestions for favorite books. The writer suggests, among other things, using funny voices, sound effects, and accents to spice things up and keep the kids interested. "If you read in a dull, tired voice your kids will think reading is dull and tiring."As for the books they suggest, they go straight from picture books to chapter books, but I did enjoy remembering both The Phantom Tollbooth and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E.
